“You misjudge me, my friend,” Gaspereaux reassured him, his voice rumbling wet in his lungs. “I have changed. All that you once knew of me, well . . .” He blew on his fat fingers and gestured as if gently releasing a butterfly to the breeze.

From old case notes, Hammett knew this:

Cletus Gaspereaux, aka the Big Man, had been born in England in the 1870s and for the first three decades of his life moved among a crowd of Dickensian “underworld” types whose diverse and profitable business enterprises spanned London. His inventive mind proved useful not only in East End alleys, but also in the private boxes at Ascot, where horse races proved little more difficult to fix than dice games down on the Thames. When Scotland Yard drove him from London he fled to New York City with a trunk-full of cash and appetites large enough to consume the world (food, Cuban cigars, and adolescent boys). For years, he lived in a cosmopolitan whirl, driven not only by “mix-ups” with local police or mob bosses, but also by his relentless pursuit of the statuette known as the Black Falcon, which culminated in 1922, San Francisco. Hammett had brought the curtain down on the Big Man’s plot, resulting in Gaspereaux’s “fatal” shooting by one of his own henchmen. Hammett had seen it with his own eyes. However, considering present circumstances, he wondered just what he’d actually seen and how much he’d ever actually known.
